Booker is now set for life.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Tuesday that Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns are progressing towards a contract extension of five years worth $158 million.
In his third season, Booker came up just short of making a stacked Western Conference All-Star team. He averaged a career-high 24.9 points per game and shot career-highs from both 2-point and 3-point range, as well as the free throw line.
It’s quite the hefty payday for the former Kentucky Wildcat and 16th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. In fact, Booker is just the first former Wildcat of his class to sign his mega extension.
Minnesota Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns should be up next.
While Booker was certainly going to eventually be paid, it’s interesting that this extension comes just days after former Wildcat guard and Booker’s best friend, Tyler Ulis, was waived by the team.
Booker’s time in Phoenix should grow well with former Arizona star Deandre Ayton joining the mix after being selected first overall in this summer’s NBA Draft. The elevation of last year’s fourth-overall pick, Josh Jackson, should be impactful as well.
The West is certainly tough but the Suns look to be just 1-2 pieces away from the playoffs. Hopefully, their young guys like Josh Jackson and Deandre Ayton turn into the stars Booker needs to help Phoenix become a playoff team.
