Kentucky may have a new point guard to watch for in the Class of 2019.
On Friday, five-star guard Nico Mannion reclassified into 2019 after originally being a 2020 recruit. It was a move expected for some time now, but unexpectedly, Kentucky is jumping into the mix.
In an interview with 247 Sports, Mannion revealed that John Calipari was among the coaches to reach out to the talented guard recently.
“My dad talked to Roy Williams and I talked to coach (John) Calipari for like 30 minutes,” Mannion said. “It was a really good talk.”
The 6-3, 180-pound Mannion is now ranked No. 11 overall in 2019 by 247, which actually puts him ahead of Kentucky guard commit Tyrese Maxey (13).
For now, the Arizona Wildcats are viewed as the heavy favorite in this recruitment. Among those predicting Arizona for Mannion are recruiting experts Evan Daniels and Andrew Slater.
Mannion, who hails from Phoenix (AZ), also holds offers from the Kansas Jayhawks, UCLA Bruins, Oregon Ducks, Villanova Wildcats, USC Trojans and Florida State Seminoles.
It will be interesting to see how this recruitment shakes out, especially if Duke or Kentucky make a run. They’re both after Cole Anthony in 2019, so if Mannion were to end up at either of these schools, it could help sway Anthony to the other.
