Following Kentucky Basketball is a year-round commitment. For many, checking in on recruits can be just as exciting as watching the games. For those folks, business is good.
Although we are still a bit uncertain about the 2018 class, and the 2019 class could end up being an all-timer, John Calipari and company are already working on the 2020 guys. The newest target that has emerged is four-star point guard Jalen Cone.
Cone is currently ranked 73rd in the 2020 class, which can be a little puzzling. Kentucky has only offered two scholarships for the class (Scottie Barnes and N’Faly Dante), so why go after a kid that has barely cracked the top 100?
At just 5’10”, there must be something about Cone that intrigues the Kentucky coaching staff. Being a North Carolina kid, Joel Justice is the primary Kentucky contact for Cone.
Could he remind justice of Tyler Ulis? Could the coaches feel like he is being under-valued at No. 73? Or are they just casting a wide net and hoping he continues to grow and develop?
Cone has not received an offer from UK, and none of the other blue blood programs have shown interest yet. But after all these years, I think the Kentucky fan base has to trust Calipari when he believes a guy can help the Wildcats.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was a four-star player and I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Willie Cauley-Stein used to play football.
So if Calipari wants to get a head start with a 5’10” guard from North Carolina, who are we to judge? Check out some of Jalen Cone’s highlights below to see some of what may be interesting the Kentucky coaching staff.
