Kentucky Wildcats Quickies: Should John Calipari Have More Titles Edition

Good morning, Big Blue Nation.

The debate over whether or not John Calipari should have more titles at Kentucky rages on. John Clay from the Lexington Herald Leader is the latest person to tackle this question and he correctly states that, well, it’s complicated.

The one title that really got away from Cal was the 38-1 season. That was one of the most stacked and talented teams in the history of college basketball. They were better than Wisconsin. They were better than every team in the country. And yet, due to tight playing and coaching down the stretch, they lost to an inferior team.

Many people point to the losses against UConn in the Final Four and in the title game. But those Kentucky teams overachieved in the postseason. Still, I contend that Kevin Ollie’s UConn team wasn’t better than Cal’s team. That Kentucky team upset MUCH better opposition than the Huskies during that magical run.

If Calipari gets another one this season, then hopefully we can put this debate to bed.

Tweets of the Day

Completely agree.

Hopefully some of you can head out and check this out.

Quickies

First mock draft has two Cats in the first round | Cats Pause- Keldon Johnson checks in at 13 and PJ Washington and 20. I have a feeling Johnson will rise up the rankings and Ashton Hagans will as well.

Could Stoops and Petrino end up on the hotseat? | Lexington Herald Leader- Bobby 2.0 has disappointed during his second run at UofL and the fans are getting restless. But still, I’m not sure who else Louisville could get. As for Stoops, he’s coming off of back-to-back bowl games and Kentucky would owe him a bazillion dollars if he was fired.

Wenyen Gabriel signs with Kings | College Spun- Hopefully things work out for Wenyen in Sacramento. He’s a great kid and if he improves he could find a spot on a roster. Leave it to the Kings to give a Kentucky kid a chance.

NBA Draft bragging rights war | Sports Illustrated- Recently Duke has had more at the top but Kentucky has more in the lottery, the first round, and overall. Plus the Kentucky guys have made more of an impact in the NBA compared to the Duke players.

FBI storyline ignored at NBA Draft | New York Post- The scandal that rocked college basketball didn’t get so much as a passing mention during the NBA Draft process. And why would it? The leadership in the NBA really doesn’t care what happens to college basketball and that’s becoming clearer with the dissolution of the One-and-Done system.

Cavaliers add ex-KU player Billy Preston | ESPN- Speaking of ignoring things and the NCAA, former Jayhawk Billy Preston never played a minute at Kansas because of some weird situation with a car but not much reporting was done about it. Now he’s getting a shot at playing with (maybe) Lebron James.

Cavs’ odds of keeping Lebron improving | CBS- The Lakers remain the favorites but the Cavs are right on their heels. Cleveland has to do more than draft Collin Sexton if they want to keep the best player in the world.

Cavs inquire about a deal for Kawhi Leonard | Sporting News- Want to keep Lebron? Here’s a great start.

Mystery “Dogman” beast is a wolf | Live Science- Much to the chagrin of the paranormal believers, a strange looking wolf creature found in Montana is just a run of the mill Gray Wolf according to DNA tests.
