Since John Calipari arrived in Lexington, he has established the tradition that Kentucky Basketball season does not officially end until the NBA Draft. The draft is the big wrap-up celebration for the season. It is a graduation ceremony for those that do not complete their degree during their initial run at UK.
The 2018 NBA Draft will take place on Thursday, June 21st, and there are five Kentucky Wildcats on the draft board. Two will almost certainly be lottery selections, two have a punchers chance to get in the 1st round, and one is just hoping for his name to be called.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Kevin Knox have been slated to be picked in the 11-15 range for months, with Shai going slightly ahead of Kevin. But in the last two weeks, both guys have been getting top-10 buzz and Knox appears to be the one that will come off of the board first.
Hamidou Diallo has consistently hovered near the beginning of the 2nd round in projections, but his athleticism could certainly get someone to take a flyer in the top 30 picks.
Jarred Vanderbilt is certainly the biggest mystery. He has gotten some 1st round buzz, but some are skeptical if he will be selected at all. The rumor is that he received a draft guarantee from a team, but there has not been a leak as to which team that may have been.
Wenyen Gabriel is not expected to be drafted, but he has certainly had his fair share of team workouts. Many of those workouts seemed to go well, so there is always the chance that a team would pick him up and give him a shot in summer league.
One intriguing thing to watch this year could be the trade scenarios. With Kawhi Leonard asking to be traded and teams trying to clear space to sign LeBron James, we could see many of the top picks move on draft night.
Possibly the most fun aspect for BBN every year is to see if Kentucky players get picked on teams that currently have Kentucky guys on the roster. It is always fun to see former Cats team up, but it is also awesome to see new teams add Kentucky players to their roster.
The Phoenix Suns are currently on the clock to make the first selection and find some help for Devin Booker.
