For those who have wanted to see Kentucky and Indiana play each other on the basketball court, your wish may be coming true.
A story in the Courier-Journal said that Indiana’s Athletic Director, Fred Glass, said that IU and UK have had “very preliminary” discussions about renewing the series.
“We’ve had some very preliminary conversations with Kentucky,” Glass said prior to IU’s annual fan event at Huber’s Orchard and Winery. “Of course, (IU coach) Archie (Miller) has a great relationship with (UK) Coach (John) Calipari. I’m optimistic that we’ll get something worked out. I’m hopeful to get something worked out, but there’s nothing to report on that.”
As most know, the two haven’t played in a regular season matchup since the 2011-2012 season in which Indiana defeated Kentucky on a last-second shot. The fallout from that, in which Kentucky fans and players were trampled as Indiana fans rushed the court, has played a factor in the two not scheduling each other during the regular season.
That stems from former Indiana Hoosiers head coach Tom Crean’s insistence on a home-and-home series, while John Calipari has been adamant that he doesn’t want to schedule a home-and-home series. Instead, Calipari proposed that the two play at a neutral site, perhaps in Indianapolis or Louisville.
But Crean is now at Georgia and Calipari and Archie Miller seem to have a fine relationship, so there is a breath of fresh life into the idea of the series renewing. It’s hard to imagine that Calipari will agree to another home-and-home series, so maybe IU is willing to play neutral site games.
A lot of fans on both sides want the series to renew, while many other fans (particularly on the Kentucky side) are indifferent toward placing Indiana on the regular season schedule.
What do you all think? Do you want to see the series renew? Should it be neutral sites or home-and-home?
