UK Recruiting: Zion Harmon joining James Wiseman and DJ Jeffries on same AAU team

The three UK targets will play on the same Tennessee-based AAU team that Penny Hardaway used to run.

Zion Harmon is currently a freshman at Adair County High School in Columbia, Kentucky, and he is on track to be one of the top basketball recruits in the entire 2021 recruiting class.

Of course, everyone in Kentucky is always clamoring for John Calipari to bring in more in-state talent. Harmon is definitely the kind of talent that would attract Calipari’s attention, but it seems like Cal will have some serious competition should he offer Harmon a scholarship.

According to Coast2coastpreps.com, Harmon has left his Boo Williams AAU team for Bluff City, formerly known as Team Penny. Harmon has dominated the 17U EBYL circuit since he was in the 7th grade, and this move puts him on an even bigger stage within the Nike circuit. He is expected to start for Bluff City immediately.

Bluff City is the AAU program built by Penny Hardaway, who was recently named the head coach at the University of Memphis. Penny’s move to being a college head coach has many believing that he will be a recruiting juggernaut considering the brand he has built in the AAU world.

Harmon will join Kentucky recruits D.J. Jeffries and James Wiseman, both 2019 recruits that have played with Team Penny for years. The Wildcats are currently the favorite to land both Wiseman and Jeffries, but many have speculated that Penny’s new gig could throw a wrench in Calipari’s plans.

Harmon is the kind of in-state talent that Kentucky has not seen in years, and while it is exciting that he is thriving on the highest AAU stage, it is also a bit worrisome that he is directly involved in Penny Hardaway’s former program.

What say you? Is this good news or bad news for Harmon’s recruitment?
