John Calipari isn’t ready to lose his potential point guard of the future.
While Calipari has been actively recruiting other guards to join UK’s roster for next season, that doesn’t mean he’s ready to lose Quade Green.
Transfer rumors have been rampant this offseason regarding the Philly product, and to this point, Green nor Calipari have done anything to slow them down.
That is, until a report came today that Calipari met with Green on Wednesday in hopes of convincing him to stay, according to KSR’s Matt Jones. Jerry Tipton also reports Green is considering his options and could still return to UK.
To this point, some had wondered if Calipari had already accepted Green was leaving, which would explain why he’s recruiting Tyrese Maxey and Jalen Lecque to potentially reclassify from 2019 into 2018.
That’s not even accounting for Ashton Hagans likely doing this to go with 2018 signee Immanuel Quickley. That’s too many guards, and having that many could mean Green is going elsewhere, but for now, Calipari isn’t ready to let that happen.
This past season, Green averaged 9.3 points, 2.7 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game as a freshman at UK. He originally committed to UK as a five-star recruit that gained a lot of hype in his senior year of high school.
Green was expected to be the Wildcats’ backcourt star before the emergence of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Now, Calipari is hoping Green can take on a bigger role as a sophomore.
