Kentucky Basketball Recruiting: Vernon Carey getting another visit from John Calipari

John Calipari is everywhere this spring, and he’s visiting Vernon Carey yet again.

John Calipari is making sure he doesn’t have another ‘down’ recruiting year by his standards.

After watching RJ Barrett, Zion Williamson, Cameron Reddish and Bol Bol end up elsewhere in the Class of 2018, Calipari is about to have a rare class in which he doesn’t land a top-five prospect.

So, he’s making sure that doesn’t happen in 2019, and one of his top targets is Vernon Carey Jr. After meeting with Carey when the most recent recruiting period began last week, Calipari will visit the five-star forward this coming Monday, according to Corey Evans.

If you’re keeping track, by the time Monday comes, Calipari will have met twice with Carey and fellow 2019 star Tyrese Maxey, who’s now considering a move up into the 2018 class. There’s been no indication Carey is considering moving up into 2018, but it is interesting nonetheless that Calipari is visiting him twice in a one-week span.

For now, the Miami Hurricanes and Duke Blue Devils are viewed as the favorites in this recruitment. Carey’s father was a star at Miami, while Duke has been in heavy pursuit of Carey for over a year.

UK had been focusing more on James Wiseman in the Class of 2019 as their top big man target, so it’s interesting to see them spending more time with Carey this spring.
