As one season closes for the Kentucky Wildcats, so begins another: Recruiting the next Cats.
A big name in the minds of BBN is EJ Montgomery, a five-star forward and the No. 12 player in the class of 2018 who decommitted from Auburn in September.
Along with coach John Calipari and his staff, Montgomery is being recruited to come to the LEX by another Kentucky signee in Immanuel Quickley.
Quickley has been on Montgomery’s recruiting trail during the McDonald’s All-American game week in Atlanta. However, Quickley is not alone in his efforts. Duke signees R.J. Barrett and Zion Williamson have been on Montgomery’s trail as well.
“All these guys are out here trying to recruit me. It’s just a continuation from — they’re always texting me and hitting me up about going to their schools,” Montgomery said.
Quickley said he has been recruiting Montgomery “the whole time” but admits he doesn’t know for sure if he is getting through to Montgomery.
“I have no idea,” “Quickley said before adding, “He hasn’t really told anybody or made his decision yet. Just trying to wait for him to commit.”
Along with Kentucky, Montgomery said he will take official visits to Duke and North Carolina. Vanderbilt, Georgetown, and Wake Forest are in the running for the other two Montgomery visits.
Kentucky does have a good report with Montgomery and his family. Montgomery made an unofficial visit to UK in February to watch the Cats defeat Missouri. Montgomery spent the most time with Kentucky assistant Kenny Payne. Montgomery came away impressed.
“It was a great visit. Great atmosphere. I have a good relationship with the coaches and they’re one of my top schools right now.”
Hopefully all the positive things UK has going for it with Montgomery leads to a commitment from the talented forward soon.
