RJ Hampton talks recruitment, calls Tyrese Maxey “my guy”

RJ Hampton has a recruiting plan and a good relationship with a Kentucky commit

Basketball: USA Men’s Junior National Team Minicamp Isaiah J. Downing-USA TODAY Sports

RJ Hampton is one of the best prospects in the country for the 2020 class. The 6-4 guard from Little Elm, Texas is highly pursued by the top programs in the country who hope to land him in the future.

According to 247 Sports, he is the number 5 overall player in the class and his college list currently includes Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, Memphis, TCU, Michigan and Texas.

Hampton is the type of player that we have seen John Calipari have the most success with. He has the ability to score from anywhere on the floor and takes a great pride in his defense. He also has a work ethic about him that keeps him in the gym working to get better.

Sounds like Hampton and Cal are a perfect match.

Charles Campbell from prepcircuit.com, caught up with Hampton after the Cowtown Tipoff to discuss his recruitment as well as other things.

Charles asked Hampton for an update on his recruitment and when a final decision could happen.

“So far I’ve taken one official visit to Memphis. I talk to Coach Penny a lot and Coach Miller just about every day. Kentucky and TCU are heavily involved. Duke has slowed down some, but Michigan and Texas are there. Kansas has been there since Day 1. I’ll probably trim my list in April or March of 2019 and my family and I will make a decision around October or November”

Hopefully, coach Cal and his staff will be in a good position with Hampton and make the cut for that final list in 2019.

Later in the interview, Charles did an interesting thing when he gave Hampton a series of names and had him say the first thing that popped into his mind. One name in particular was Kentucky commit Tyrese Maxey and RJ responded.

“Tyrese is my guy, I’ve been playing with him since 1st grade. One of the most dynamic players in the country. A pure scorer that can get anywhere on the floor”

It's good to know that he has such a good relationship with a Kentucky guy and hopefully Maxey is able to get in his ear a bit and help push him towards the Cats.
