When the 2018-19 season ends, Saturday’s win over North Carolina will likely be looked back on as the breakout game of Ashton Hagans.
The freshman point guard dominated the game on the defensive end, as he was a big reason the high-scoring Tar Heels only mustered up 72 points, their second-lowest output of the season. The win was also UK’s first over an AP top-10 ranked team since beating West Virginia on Jan. 27.
A big part of that was Hagans’ school-tying eight steals to go with seven points and a career-high four rebounds.
All of this helped helped Hagans earn the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday.
The honor is the third of the season and second in a row for Kentucky, as Keldon Johnson has twice been named the league’s top freshman.
Kentucky has now won more weekly SEC honors (92) than any other school during the Calipari era, including 74 SEC Freshman of the Week honors and 18 SEC Player of the Week awards.
North Carolina, the Harlem Globetrotters, the Lakers or hell even the Golden State Warriors, Ashton Hagans doesn’t care who you are.
