The Kentucky Wildcats will face the Penn State Nittany Lions in the 2019 Citrus Bowl.
The game will kick off at 1 p.m. on January 1st at Camping World Stadium in Orlando and will air on ABC. It will be the final game for two of the best to ever play at Kentucky in running back Benny Snell and linebacker Josh Allen.
Snell has entered his name into the 2019 NFL Draft, so this will be the final time he plays in Kentucky blue. He’s also closing in on the Kentucky rushing record and needs just 107 yards to break it. His 3,729 rushing yards rank 15th all-time in the SEC, and only Herschel Walker (49) and Tim Tebow (57) have scored more rushing touchdowns in league history.
As for Allen, he’s a graduating senior that is likely to be a top-10 pick in the draft after winning a host of national defensive award, including the Lott IMPACT Trophy, the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.
Kentucky and Penn State enter the game ranked in the top 15 of the final College Football Playoff rankings, as they both narrowly missed out on a New Year’s Six bowl.
Both teams have identical 9-3 records, but their season’s have been vastly different in terms of expectations vs. actual results.
Penn State began the year with playoff dreams, but it was clear from the start that they would struggle to reach them. They started the year narrowly escaping Appalachian State in overtime, then went on to lose to Michigan State, Ohio State and Michigan, the latter being a 42-7 destruction.
Kentucky, on the other hand, came into this season with low expectations with many so-called experts picking them to win 5-6 games. They went on to surpass everyone’s expectations by upsetting Florida, Mississippi State and Missouri, three teams that finished in the final CFP Top 25.
