The UK women had a strong defensive showing as they forced Virginia into 32 turnovers and defeated the Cavaliers 63-51 in Rupp Arena.
It was a close, low-scoring game through the first half, but the Cats opened it up in the second. Virginia threatened a comeback in the fourth quarter as Erica Martinsen hit back to back threes to cut the lead to ten, but Taylor Murray hit two free throws to not only seal the win, but also become the 34th women’s player to join the 1000 point club.
Martinsen led the Cavaliers with 15 points and 6’9” Felicia Aiyeotan had a game high 13 rebounds.
Three Cats were in double figures led by Taylor Murray with 12 followed by Jaida Roper and Rhyne Howard with 11. Ogechi Anyagaligbo led the Cats with 8 rebounds.
The Cats return to action on Sunday at Memorial against High Point at 2:00 pm.
