Brown has been someone UK has flirted with for the past year, but John Calipari was never willing to go all-in for the five-star center. The level of interest has fluctuated, so much that they appeared to be out of the mix until the fall when they recruited Brown harder after missing out on Bol Bol.
But it’s no secret that the 2018 class has one of the worst group of big men in recent memory. Outside of Bol, no one looks like a clear instant contributor for a program like UK, and that includes Brown, who is ranked 27th overall by 247 Sports.
It doesn’t help Brown’s case that UK is also in the running for an elite center in James Wiseman, who is currently a 2019 recruit that may reclassify into 2018. I think the potential of adding Wiseman is the biggest reason why UK never offered Brown.
It’s also possible that UK loses only 2-3 players for the NBA this offseason, and with three current signees, UK could go into the summer with as many as 12 scholarship players before Wiseman makes his reclassification decision.
Let’s just hope Calipari’s decision to pass on Brown doesn’t come back to bite UK later on.
