John Calipari gives positive injury update on Quade Green

It sounds like Quade Green is close to a return, possibly when Kentucky hosts Florida.

The Kentucky Wildcats are getting set to host the Florida Gators in a primetime SEC showdown.

Depending on results around the league Saturday, the winner of this game could be in first place in the SEC at day’s end. Kentucky is also hoping to rebound from Tuesday’s debacle at South Carolina, making this easily one of the most important games in the Cats’ regular season.

For such a big game, Kentucky will ideally have everyone healthy enough to play. That includes starting guard Quade Green, who has missed the last three games while recovering from a back injury. The Cats managed to go 2-1 during that stretch, but to beat the Gators, Kentucky badly needs Green to play.

Thankfully, Green was seen getting set to practice on Friday. Then when John Calipari met with the media, he said Green is probably a game-time decision for Saturday night and hopes the freshman guard can give Kentucky some minutes.

The fact Green is even a game-time decision suggests he is very close to a return. If he misses Saturday, perhaps he’ll return Tuesday when Kentucky hosts Mississippi State.

Earlier in the week, Calipari expressed optimism that Green would return this weekend. Calipari hasn’t said how much work Green has gotten in this week after missing the last two weeks of practice.

While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has established himself as the superior guard, Green brings an added dimension to this team as a better facilitator, not to mention a great three-point shooter on a team devoid of them.

It also would help keep Shai out of foul trouble. Even 10-15 minutes off the bench by Green could be critical to a win over the Gators.
