UK Basketball Recruiting: Moses Brown ready to end recruitment soon

And why UK is very unlikely to offer him.

The recruitment of Moses Brown is nearing the end, and a decision could be made as early as February.

In an interview with Adam Zagoria, Brown opened up about his recruitment, which he hopes to finish up soon, possibly by the end of next month.

When asked about UK — the perceived dream school — Brown didn’t sound too optimistic that a scholarship offer was coming.

“I still have yet to take a visit to Kentucky and they haven’t offered me yet so,” said Brown.

Brown has been someone UK kept tabs on since last spring, but the level of interest has fluctuated, so much that they appeared to be out of the mix until the fall, when they began recruiting Brown harder after missing out on Bol Bol and other 2018 big man targets.

But it’s no secret that the 2018 class features one of the worst group of big men in recent memory. Outside of Bol, no one looks like a clear instant contributor for a program like UK.

That’s not to say a guy like Brown doesn’t have the ability to become a star over time in college, but Calipari usually goes boom or bust in recruiting. He either gets the best or regroups and focuses on the next class.

It’s also worth noting that UK’s scholarship situation next season is very fluid. It’s possible that only 2-3 players leave for the NBA this offseason, and with three current signees, UK could go into the summer with as many as 12 scholarship players.

Then you’ve got the possibility of James Wiseman reclassifying into the 2018 class. That would be the 13th scholarship spot, which would explain why UK has been so hesitant to offer Brown.

If they do and Brown commits, there’s a chance they have a full allotment of scholarships in the summer, leaving no room for Wiseman is he moves up a class.

My guess is that’s a big reason why UK hasn’t offered Brown and won’t do so if he ultimately commits in the coming months. That’s not even included the (unlikely) event Zion Williamson commits to UK and gives them four signees. Then someone unexpected may need to leave just to have an open spot for Wiseman if he reclassifies.

For now, it appears the UCLA Bruins, Florida State Seminoles and Maryland Terrapins are the only real contenders.
