UK Basketball: John Calipari gives injury update on Quade Green and Jemarl Baker

Quade Green’s status is very much in doubt, but Jemarl Baker is making good progress, and there’s nothing new on Jarred Vanderbilt.

The Kentucky Wildcats are getting set to face the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville.

UK is currently in Nashville after leaving early on Thursday to beat the weather. Before the two SEC foes square off, head coach John Calipari held a teleconference to preview Saturday’s game while giving updates on his team.

That included a brief update on starting guard Quade Green, who missed Tuesday’s win over Texas A&M due to a back injury. It wasn’t revealed that Green had an injury until game time, so there was some thought it wasn’t too serious.

However, Green has not practiced at all this week, Calipari revealed. Calipari also added that he wasn’t sure if Green would practice Friday, putting his status in doubt for Saturday and possibly next Tuesday at South Carolina.

If Green remains out, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will continue to be the primary point guard and continue to lock down that spot, even when Green returns. It’s become clear who the better guard is, though Green still makes a big impact on this team, and not having him is a big loss.

Calipari did have some slightly good news regarding Jemarl Baker, who is recovering from knee surgery that has kept him sidelined all season. Calipari said that Baker has started rehabbing his knee. Baker has been seen shooting around in pregame warmups, but he’s still got a ways to go in his recovery. We shouldn’t expect to see him this season.

One of, if not the biggest question with UK right now is Jarred Vanderbilt and when his debut will come. The talented forward has returned to practice and could be nearing a return to action.

However, Calipari said there is nothing new on Vanderbilt, so we probably shouldn’t expect to see him play against the Commodores.
