The recruitment of R.J. Barrett is winding down, and it looks like a decision could come very soon.
On Wednesday, Barrett canceled his official visit with the Michigan Wolverines. According to a report from Duck Territory, Barrett has also eliminated the Arizona Wildcats from consideration in wake of the FBI investigation.
That means Barrett is down to three schools, including the Oregon Ducks, Duke Blue Devils and Kentucky Wildcats. However, Scout recruiting director Evan Daniels logged his 247 crystal ball pick in favor of Duke.
And according to a report from Ben Roberts of the Lexington-Herald Leader, Duke looks like the pick.
The Herald-Leader was told late Wednesday night that Duke was the most likely landing spot for Barrett, despite some recent buzz that UK might have a real shot at his commitment. Barrett’s decision is also expected to come soon.
If this is true, it means Zion Williamson will be alone at the top of Kentucky’s big board in the Class of 2018. It was always hard to see both Williamson and Barrett playing at the same college, and Williamson seemed more likely to pick Kentucky than Barrett.
Those are two elite players who will demand a lot of touches at whatever college team they’re playing for, not to mention both Duke and Kentucky will already be loaded with other talented players.
Still, losing Barrett to Duke will be a big sting to Kentucky and John Calipari if this turns out to be true.
