UK Women’s Swim Team is set to build on last year’s success

The 2016-2017 season was one of the best in program history, and, after a busy summer, the women’s team is ready to go this fall.

Fall is probably my favorite time of year. All the best college sports have begun or are on the verge of beginning. For UK’s Swimming and Diving Teams, the season begins in a few short weeks with the Sun Shall Shine Intrasquad meet on September 29. That meet will begin a season that has high expectations for the women’s side.

Coming off a season that finished with the Wildcats taking 14th place at the Women’s National Championship, the women’s team reloaded and returned with most of their stars from last season. UK has three top backstrokers returning from last season in Ali Galyer, Asia Seidt, and Bridgette Alexander. Seidt and Alexander, by virtue of their participation at the World University Games in July, earned spots on the 2017-2018 US National Team, along with Head Coach Lars Jorgensen and assistant coach Allison Reed. In addition to the backstrokers, the women’s team returns Geena Freriks and Kathryn Painter who were B-finalists in the 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley, respectively, at the national championship meet last year. The Wildcats are also excited to return sophomore Madison Winstead and to welcome freshman Bailey Bonnett in the breastroke events. Both Winstead and Bonnett competed with Seidt, Alexander, and Freriks (among other Wildcats) at the US National Meet in June.

With all the returning swimmers, and some stellar freshmen coming in, Floswimming has UK ranked 13th in their preseason poll. Head Coach Lars Jorgensen will have his hands full getting his team ready for the championship meet season, but after last season, he’s ready to improve on what he got started last year.
