The latest update from the Westgate Las Vegas Superbook places Kentucky and Duke as the co-favorites to take home the national title in 2018.
Kentucky opened at 10-1 odds in April, but have since moved to 7-1 odds, along with the Blue Devils.
Michigan State is next in line at 8-1, with Kansas and Arizona at 10-1. Louisville comes in at 12-1 and the defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels didn’t garner much love with 30-1 odds.
Texas saw a big jump after landing a huge commitment from 5-star big man Mohamed Bamba, jumping to 25-1 odds from the previous 300-1. Missouri also had a big jump, leaping to 40-1 odds from 300-1 after having a strong offseason with recruiting.
What will be interesting to see is how much Marvin Bagley changes all of this. The No. 1 overall recruit in 2018 is trying to join a college team this season. Among the schools in the running are Kentucky and Duke, along with USC, who is currently 20-1 odds to win it all...
That seems a bit high for the Trojans. They have a talented team already, but it’s hard to put their current roster as one that has better championship odds than North Carolina, UCLA, Florida, Villanova, Wichita State and West Virginia.
Back in June, Sporting News’ Way-Too-Early Top 25 had the Trojans ranked 15th, behind all of those aforementioned teams. USC may be better than some of those teams, but not all of them. Perhaps the oddsmakers think Bagley is going to USC, which would make these odds more reasonable.
You could also make a good argument for Duke being favored to win it all as a result of potentially adding Bagley. Then again, adding Bagley should make Duke the runaway favorites.
