When it comes to guards in the 2018 class, guys like Immanuel Quickley, Quentin Grimes and now Keldon Johnson are getting the most hype as UK targets.
However, John Calipari is still very much recruiting Darius Garland, who some believe is the top point guard in 2018. After offering Garland in July, the five-star guard is now scheduled to visit UK for Big Blue Madness.
In addition to being a top-16 recruit in every recruiting service (high is 9th by Scout; low is 16th by 247), he also has ties to Cameron Reddish, who Garland has talked a lot about playing with in college. Duke has been the presumed favorite to land both players, but now that Garland has an offer and is set to visit Lexington, that could change these recruitments.
As far as who the superior point guard is in this class, ask five different recruiting analysts, and you’ll probably get five different answers between Garland, Te Jones (now committed to Duke), Quickley and Grimes. With Jones now committed to Duke, one has to wonder if Garland wants to pick a school with another elite point guard commit.
However, that’s what Garland would be facing at UK with Quickley likely picking the Cats soon. That’s why the buzz in his recruitment as of late has been with Vanderbilt and Indiana. Garland currently plays at Brentwood Academy in Tennessee, which is the why the Commodores look like a real threat to land him.
Still, you can never count out Calipari for an elite point guard, especially when said guard is visiting for Big Blue Madness.
