NBA: Playoffs-Cleveland Cavaliers at Boston Celtics Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

The blockbuster deal of the summer has been completed. Kyrie Irving’s request has been granted, and he’s been traded to the Boston Celtics. The Celtics are sending the Cleveland Cavaliers Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Brooklyn Nets’ 2018 first-round pick in return.

Cavs fans and Celtics fans have thrown blows back and forth on who won the deal, but it’s too early to tell. The Celtics are certainly upgrading at the point guard position; no matter how well Thomas could score, he could not defend a single player in the NBA.

But the Cavs are getting a good stretch big in Jae Crowder who will probably be one of the team’s best shooters, and the Celtics will certainly notice his absence. Plus they’re getting Brooklyn’s pick, which is sure to be a top selection. Ultimately, the winner of this trade will somewhat be dependent on whether or not LeBron James leaves in free agency next offseason. If he does, the Cavaliers will be gutted. But it may be worth it if they can get past Boston in the Eastern Conference Finals again.
