One of the top cornerbacks in the Class of 2018 has picked the Kentucky Wildcats.
On Wednesday, four-star cornerback Stanley Garner announced his commitment to UK. Garner made the call at a ceremony at his high school. His five finalists included the Kentucky, Michigan, Clemson, Alabama, and Louisville.
The Dillard High School (FL) product is rated as a four-star recruit by Rivals and the 31st-best corner in 2018. 247 Sports rates him a three-star recruit and the 441st overall recruit in 2017.
Garner unofficially visited Kentucky back in July in addition to a football camp in June. He has camped with Miami, Louisville and Alabama. Garner also holds scholarship offers from Tennessee, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami and West Virginia among many others.
While Garner has yet to take any of his official visits, he plans to take several visits this fall. That means UK still has work to do in keeping his pledge while he visits other schools.
Mark Stoops and his staff are used to that by now, being that they recruit against just about every powerhouse program now. Seeing schools like Alabama, Clemson and Michigan speaks to how hard it will be to keep Garner, who is actually one of two corners announcing this week.
Three-star corner Jamari Brown will announce on August 17th, and that looks like a Kentucky - Auburn battle which the Cats will win. Getting Garner and Brown would be huge for the future of the secondary, which will see most of the guys on the current two-deep depth chart graduate by 2019.
That includes juniors Darius West, Derrick Baity, Chris Westry, Mike Edwards and Lonnie Johnson. Having a talented guy like Garner to develop in 2018 could help ease the loss of those guys for the 2019 season.
