John Calipari’s U19 USA team is moving onto the FIBA World Cup semifinal after defeating Germany 81-59. Their opponent is one of the other top teams in the event, the Canadian National Team.
The Canadians finished second in their group during preliminary play, and then breezed past Angola to open up the Round of 16. However, the defeated France by just six points in the quarterfinal. They’ll be led by Canadian standout R.J. Barrett, who’s averaging 19 points per game, and Abu Kigab, who’s averaging 11.6 rebounds per game.
Calipari’s team has obliterated every team they’ve played en route to the semifinal. After winning every preliminary game (and the Round of 16 game) by 40 points or more, they defeated Germany by 22.
They’ve yet to face a real test, but they’re likely about to get their toughest opponent yet. Team USA will of course be led by the two Kentucky Wildcats, PJ Washington and Hamidou Diallo, as well as UK recruit Cameron Reddish. All three are in the top 25 in scoring averages so far in the competition.
If Team USA wins, they’ll take on the winner of Spain vs Italy on Sunday.
