It remains to be seen who John Calipari will be coaching when he takes his USA Basketball U19 squad to Egypt.
It may not include any current or incoming Kentucky Wildcats, which would be unfortunate since several of them are very deserving of such an honor. The silver lining in this would be more 2018 recruits able to come to Egypt and spend several weeks with Calipari.
On Sunday, the Team USA Basketball website released the names of players who will be attending the Team USA U19 tryout. That list has since been taken down, and KSR reports that there still could be some Wildcats earning invites.
In the meantime, the list that was leaked included several UK targets in the 2018 class, including five-star forward Marvin Bagley, five-star shooting guard Romeo Langford and five-star forward Bol Bol.
Depending on what recruiting service you look at, these are among the top 10 prospects in every major ranking. That includes 247 Sports, who has Bagley at No. 2, Langford at No. 3 and Bol at No. 5.
Oh, and UK is the perceived favorite for all three. There’s no timetable for any of them to make a decision other than Langford will likely wait until the spring, but Calipari getting to be with them in the summer only helps his chances of landing all three elite prospects.
Another name on the initial list was five-star wing Cameron Reddish. Duke is viewed as the heavy favorite for him, but Calipari getting to coach Reddish for several weeks only helps UK’s chances.
The actual USA U19 tryout list is expected to be released later this week. Hopefully it has all of these guys and some UK signees too.
