Pat Riley confident Bam Adebayo will have Heat jersey retired one day

Talk about being confident in your draft pick.

Bam Adebayo was one of the most uncertain draft prospects, in terms of where he’d be drafted. But after drafting him 14th, the Miami Heat are anything but uncertain about how good he will be.

“One day, this jersey is going to be up in the rafters,” Heat team president Pat Riley said as he stood beside Adebayo, holding up a No. 13 Heat jersey at his introductory press conference.

Adebayo isn’t a lottery pick that many expected; he’s an old-school big in a new age of basketball where everyone can make three-pointers. But Erik Spoelstra and Pat Riley don’t care. They got the guy they wanted. Spoelstra made it clear that he’s happy with the pick, according to Manny Navarro of the Miami Herald.

“I’m still stunned by a young man this large and athletic and explosive that can move his feet and be that light on the ground. We think that fits to our defensive system, our style and the way the league is going you need guys that can show that kind of quickness. He can also punish teams in the paint at the rim. Look, the sky is the limit with Bam because of his work ethic and because of all these things that we just mentioned. We think he fits with the way the league is going. Just look at the Finals. You saw guys of his athleticism out there running around and making plays at the highest level. So, we love him.”

Hopefully this confidence in Adebayo only makes him hungrier to prove his new bosses right.
