Mark Smith recruiting update: 4-star guard sets decision date

Mark Smith wants to wrap up his recruitment sooner rather than later.

UPDATE

Mark Smith will make his college decision Wednesday evening, according to Scout.com.

It’s looking more and more like the Kentucky Wildcats won’t be getting Mark Smith.

The four-star guard just wrapped up a visit with Ohio State, and it doesn’t appear he’ll be visiting Kentucky before making his college decision. According to 247 Sports, Smith could make a decision as soon as this week, which means we wouldn’t visit Kentucky, despite previously saying he would.

Smith was in the state recently for the Derby Festival Classic, but he never reportedly made his way down to Lexington. It’s still possible Smith could pick Kentucky without visiting. The Wildcats could certainly use him if Hamidou Diallo stays in the NBA Draft.

Illinois is who’s getting most of the crystal ball love recently with Michigan State trailing. It looks like Smith wants to stay close to home and be the face of Illinois basketball vs be a guy fighting for any minutes at Kentucky or even Michigan State.

And it was really Jemarl Baker and Cam Johnson who Kentucky wanted to add at guard in the spring. Baker has already signed with Kentucky, and it’s possible Johnson commits later in May.

Still, Smith is a solid prospect who could develop into a nice player in Lexington, but it’s looking like that won’t happen.
