On Tuesday, the team claimed DeAndre Liggins off waivers after the Cleveland Cavaliers waived him Sunday. Liggins now joins former Wildcat Nerlens Noel and noted Kentucky fan Dirk Nowitzki.
Liggins, now classified as a third-year NBA player, has played in 61 games (19 starts) for the Cavs this season, averaging 2.4 points in 12.3 minutes per contest. His playing time had dropped off after J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert returned from injuries that allowed Liggins to start for several weeks. Cleveland waived him in favor of Dahntay Jones, who Liggins beat out for the final roster spot after the preseason, but ultimately lost out heading into the playoffs.
Liggins is now under contract with Dallas through next season, though it’s non-guaranteed. He still has a decent shot at making their roster next season, and he’ll get a brief audition for Dallas’ final two games of the regular season.
