*UPDATE*: Your winner, by a margin of just 2 votes (over Caleb Swanigan), is JOSH HART. All candidates' names are revealed below, just before the table.
Conference play is approximately halfway over and we’re 38 days from Selection Sunday (March 12), so let’s take another blind look at who is 2016-2017’s National Player of the Year thus far.
If you’re not familiar with the exercise, the idea is to choose a player solely based on team, per 40, and advanced numbers, so players are not identified by their real names. Instead, different interrelated cultural identifiers are used to refer to the candidates. Today, it's University of Kentucky basketball legends.
I’m still adjusting the process, and the significant change this time is that I used BPI as the primary team measure for a candidate. I admit to being only somewhat familiar with BPI, but anything is better than RPI, and using the KenPom team ranking (which most of our readers know by heart) makes it too easy to guess candidates’ identities. I am not abandoning KenPom completely, though; I’m using his Adjusted Strength of Schedule measure.
Last time around — while voting was blind — readers selected senior Villanova G Josh Hart. UCLA's Lonzo Ball was the victor in November's blind vote.
It appears that I made a table that works. Unfortunately, I could not embolden the leaders in each categories due to formatting limitations. Cast your vote below and let’s explore your choices further in the comments. I'll post the candidates' real identities early tomorrow morning.
Just to prepare you: this is going to be the most difficult choice you've ever made in this series. There isn't much obvious separation between these dudes now that they have 20+ games on their respective resumes.
Givens is LONZO BALL (UCLA).
Delk is LAURI MARKKANEN (Arizona).
Davis is FRANK MASON (KU).
Macy is JOHNATHAN MOTLEY (Baylor).
Walker is JOSH HART (VU).
Mashburn is LUKE KENNARD (Duke).
Issel is CALEB SWANIGAN (Purdue).
