Kentucky Wildcats Quickies: Still Figuring it Out Edition

New, 8 comments

Cats leave questions on the court after beating Harvard, Bowl fate to be revealed today, Volleyball headed to Sweet 16, and Jamal Murray clowns Lonzo Ball.

NCAA Basketball: Harvard at Kentucky Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

The Kentucky Wildcats had a healthy 72-52 lead late in the second half against the Harvard Crimson. They attained it by playing stifling defense, forcing turnovers, and getting easy transition buckets.

But then the young Cats took their foot off of the gas and let Harvard back in the game with a barrage of threes and easy buckets. The final 79-70 score was another example of how the almost all freshman team still doesn’t understand that they have to play hard for 40 minutes. But it’ll come.

Tweet of the Day

Sweet 16 Bound!!!!!

Jamal Murray has been REALLY good for the Denver Nuggets this year. He completely dominated Lonzo Ball and then let him know about it last night to the chagrin of fellow former Wildcat Julius Randle...

Stop telling me the rest of the NBA players don’t take extra pleasure in beating Lonzo and making him look silly because there is plenty of evidence to support the opposite. Murray did respond on twitter after Laker fans and Lonzo apologists went after him on twitter...

Murray had the last laugh as Denver beat LA 115-100. Ball had 9 points and a +/- of -15. Murray had 28 points with a +/- of +14.

Quickies

Nick Richards and SKJ give John Calipari and potent 1-2 punch in paint | SEC Country- With PJ Washington in foul trouble and Wenyen Gabriel being ineffective for most of the game, John Calipari tinkered with the line-up playing Nick Richards and Sacha Killeya-Jones together and he liked the results. Both Richards and SKJ have been playing extremely well and the Cats now how a viable option when they play bigger opponents in the post.

“We’re not playing winning basketball” | Lexington Herald Leader- While Cal was plenty happy with the win, he wasn’t pleased with the late lapse in energy on the court once his team reached a 20 point lead:

The issue with this team – and it’s just going to take time and I’ve got to demand it – if you demand a lot, you get a lot. If you accept mediocrity, you’re going to get it every time, especially with young kids. Playing winning basketball, there are stretches that we don’t play winning basketball. I’m just going to make whatever play I want to make. We broke off plays at the end and guys just – why did you do that? Well, I was thinking of the tree, and then the bike came out, and the car almost hit me. What? I mean, why did you do that? So, we had a bunch of those today.

Those last few sentences have be dying from laughter right now.

Wildcats will learn bowl fate today | Courier-Journal- The heavy favorite is a Nashville trip for the Music City Bowl with Iowa as the likely opponent. It’s the same day at the Kentucky vs. Louisville basketball game so get ready for a Big Blue Marathon.

Big run and big letdown give Cats more to learn from | Coachcal.com-

Just when we go up 20 or go up 30 be able to put our foot on their throats and be able to get good plays and good shots, and not turn into a selfish team," Knox said. "I think that's what we do when we get up. People start trying to get their own. The next thing you know they're down eight. Coach is just trying to get us to when we get up by that much, be able to put your foot on their throat and be able to go up by 50 and have fun.

Couple of things here: 1. Kevin Knox is the best player on the team and it seems he’s the smartest as well; 2. The players understand 100% what the issue is and they’re going to get it figured out.

D.J. Jeffries puts on a show for Cats fans | SEC Country- 5 star junior D.J. Jefferies put on a show at the Marshall County Hoops Fest scoring 35 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. He was surrounded by Kentucky fans begging for autographs after the game. Cal and the Cats should feel very good about landing him.

Does Kentucky belong in the top 10 | WDRB- Rick Bozich asks some legit questions and throws some numbers at you that will have you asking the same questions. The Cats will have their chance to prove their worth after Monmouth on Saturday.

Comeback Cats move to Sweet 16 | UK Athletics- For their second straight game, the Kentucky Women’s Volleyball team had to battle back to win their tournament game, this time over WKU. Next up for the 4 seed? The BYU Cougars.

Player breakdown vs. Harvard | KSR- High marks for Kevin Knox, Hamidou Diallo, Sacha Killeya-Jones, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Let the debate begin: Alabama or Ohio State? | ESPN- With their win over previously undefeated Wisconsin for the B1G championship, did Ohio State do enough to cover their two blowout losses or will one loss Alabama get the fourth spot in the playoffs?

Phil Fulmer reaches out to Les Miles about coaching vacancy | CBS- Les Miles has been out of football for a year and was ran out of Baton Rouge. But he has a national title under his belt and at this point it’s the best Vol fans can hope for.

Georgia exacts revenge on Auburn when it mattered the most | SEC Country- The Bulldogs should vault from 6 to 2 in the playoff picture after they dismantled the Auburn Tigers in the SEC Championship Game.

Clemson leaves no doubt | Sporting News- The Tigers looked every bit the part of a national title repeating team as they crushed the Miami Hurricanes 38-3. I watched that game and it looked like a Division I team taking on a Division III team.

Mick Cronin goes after Xavier player | CBS- The most underrated and vicious rivalry in college sports may be Cincinnati vs. Xavier. The two teams have had on-court brawls and trash talking aplenty, but Mick Cronin decided to take it to the next level by going after J.P. Macura in the handshake line after the Musketeers’ win over the Bearcats. Cronin had to be dragged off the court. He claims Macura went at him first.

Disney is pulling ‘Frozen’ short from ‘Coco’ screenings | Movieweb- Internet outrage wins again as movie goers complained that a 22 minute movie short was too long so it’s now been pulled. God forbid people sit through a 22 minute short that their kids probably like. We gotta get all the internet outrage points.
