It seems like just a few weeks ago that I was tweeting videos of Jarred Vanderbilt gingerly shooting free throws. But over the last week, he has been teasing his return (or debut?) for Kentucky basketball.
On Tuesday, the versatile 5-star recruit posted a video on Instagram suggesting that he is almost game ready.
Vanderbilt was one of many star recruits to join Kentucky this season. But he has been battling an ankle injury that, at one point, threatened to keep him out for the entire season. His biggest strength is rumored to be his versatility. Coach Cal went on record before the season as saying he would love the option of playing Vanderbilt at the point and having size and length at every position. Based on this video, I do not think he was exaggerating.
He is listed as a forwarded, and could legitimately play the 2-4 slots for Kentucky at any point. He would definitely add something to the reeling defense. And he may just be the play-maker on offense that Calipari has been waiting for.
It has been clear in the first two months of the season that this Kentucky team is missing something. I am not convinced that Vanderbilt will solve all of their problems, but I cannot wait to find out.
On Calipari’s weekly call in show, assistant coach Joel Justus said there is no update on Vanderbilt (or fellow frosh Jemarl Baker). It is doubtful we will see Vanderbilt this weekend, but it seems more likely that he will be available in January when SEC play gets in full swing. For this team’s sake, I sure hope so.
