Kentucky Wildcats Quickies: Beat the Hokies Edition

New, 10 comments

The Cats have their hands full with the Hokies, Kentucky football hosting recruits, UK players graduating, and what I’m watching on Netflix. More stuff, too.

NCAA Basketball: Harvard at Kentucky Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

The last time Kentucky played a Power 5 team was way back in November when they took on the Kansas Jayhawks. After a slew of games in a short amount of time, John Calipari has lessened the load and upped the competition.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are coming into Rupp Arena today averaging 96 points per game and boasting a 9-1 record. They are an offensive juggernaut but they don’t play the caliber of defense that Kentucky can play.

The big test for the Kentucky Wildcats will be defending the three point line, something they have struggled with at times, as the Hokies are deadly beyond the arch.

If Kentucky can get a win today, it would seem that Cal’s team is right on schedule.

Tweet of the Day

Congrats to Stephen Johnson and the rest of the graduates in the class of 2017. I’m really gonna miss that dude.

I’m so pumped. It’s nice to be able to look forward to a high caliber opponent once again.

Quickies

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander excited to face off against his cousin | SEC Country- Nickeil Alexander-Walker is Shai’s cousin, former teammate, and sharer of the hyphen name phenomenon. Alexander-Walker is a freshman for VA Tech and there is nothing he would love more than beating his cousin in Rupp Arena.

5 things to know about the Hokies | Lexington Herald Leader- The two main points out of here is that Buzz Williams is a very good coach and they Cats are going to have their work cut out for them on defense.

Mark Stoops hosting biggest recruiting day of the year | KSR- The football staff is on a roll right now with recruiting and they look to capitalize on it this weekend. Nick Roush breaks down who is there and who the Cats have a good chance to get.

Cal expects Quade Green and Sacha Killyea-Jones to play | Courier-Journal- Kentucky will need all hands on deck today in order to keep up with the scoring of the Hokies. Quade Green suffered an eye injury against Monmouth and SKJ was out with an ankle sprain. Both are back which is good since the former is the best shooter on the team while the latter may be the most offensively skilled big man in the post.

Jerry Palm has Cats as a 9 seed | CBS Sports- He also has Arizona State and Miami as one seeds. Yes this is stupid and no I don’t know why I linked it.

Second chance points for the Cats could decide the game | CoachCal.com- The thing that scares Buzz Williams the most is Kentucky’s ability to rebound the ball offensively.

I think the only chance you have at beating Kentucky is limiting their second shots, and doing everything possible, regardless of your scheme, to try to force them to take shots outside the paint," Williams said. "They're just so, so long. That would be what I would say. I think part of the reason why their offensive numbers are so efficient is because they do such a great job on the glass.

UK athletes graduate with smiles | KSR- Stephen Johnson wasn’t the only one that graduated yesterday. Makayla Epps, Garrett Johnson, and basketball manager Kevin Massey also received diplomas.

And how cool is this?

OKC takes down Philly in chippy affair | ESPN- The Thunder’s Russell Westbrook and the 76ers Joel Embiid went at each other all night in last night’s thrilling game. OKC walked away with a 119-117 victory and Westbrook let Embiid hear about it going out the door:

He told me to go home, man. I mean, this is my home, so I guess it's on him to go home," Embiid said. "They won the game. I give them a lot of credit -- they did a lot of things. But I mean, the dude shot like 10-of-33. I wish I would've shot 33 times. I guess we would've had a better chance of actually winning the game. But he told me to go home, man. This is my home. I ain't going nowhere

Hahaha, that’s an awesome quote.

Is the XFL coming back? | CBS Sports- There are rumors swirling that Vinc McMahon could be bringing back his ill-fated alternative to the NFL. The WWE isn’t exactly denying the rumors.

Reggie Bush done with the NFL | Sporting News- Bush didn’t play in 2017 but he is now officially hanging it up. As one of the most dynamic players in the history of college football, there were big expectations for Bush in the NFL but he never really met them. In his 11 seasons in the NFL, he eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark only twice and the jaw dropping plays we saw him make at least once a game at USC were few and far between in the pros.

Ex-wife of NBA player arrested in connection with his murder | Yahoo!- Lorenzon Wright was murdered in 2010 but police are just now making an arrest and the victims ex-wife is the prime suspect.

Does Die Hard qualify as a Christmas movie? | Nerdist- Yes and it is the best Christmas movie ever made. Period.

George Clooney set to star in Watergate series on Netflix | The Hollywood reporter- Color me intrigued. Netflix has produced some extremely high quality series and I would love to see this happen. I just finished The Punisher and the limited series Godless which is a Western. I just started Wormwood, a docudrama that chronicles the strange death of a CIA biochemist and his connection to the MK Ultra experiments.

And that was “What series’ is James watching right now”.
