The Kentucky Wildcats will almost certainly come out of the weekend with at least one new basketball pledge.
All eyes will be on R.J. Barrett on Friday night, but now we know Keldon Johnson is deciding on Saturday, according to Tipton Edits:
The expectation was Johnson would decide sometime next week, being that Wednesday is the deadline for high school seniors to sign national letters of intent in the fall. The belief was Johnson was waiting to see what Barrett does, which is only reinforced seeing that he’ll decide one day after Barrett.
Barrett is down to UK , Duke and Oregon, though all signs point to Duke being the pick. But if he were to pick Uk, that makes this an absolutely stacked backcourt next year, something Barrett may not be willing to be part of. He may instead look to pick Maryland or Texas, somewhere he could be ‘the’ guy.
But if Barrett isn’t at UK, it makes it much easier for Johnson to be the guy in Lexington, which is what the current expectation is.
I do also think Johnson was hoping to have an idea of where Zion Williamson is going, being that they both could end up playing the wing in college. But Zion could play at the 4 and Johnson at the 3, making it much easier for them to coexist on the same team. Zion appears to be leaning toward a spring decision.
If Johnson picks UK, he’ll join Immanuel Quickley as fall signees for John Calipari’s program. There’s also a strong expectation that Tyler Herro will join it very soon, possibly next week.
Johnson, who hails from Oak Hill Academy in Virginia, is a top-25 prospect in every major service, the highest being seventh overall by ESPN. 247 Sports recruiting ace Jerry Mayer has previously said that Johnson will be ranked high in their updated rankings.
Johnson is currently ranked 11th by 247. His lowest ranking is 24th by Scout. You can bet he’ll end up being a top-15, if not top-10 recruit in every major ranking by the time the spring rolls around.
