UK Basketball Recruiting: Keldon Johnson will commit during fall signing period

Kentucky looks to hold off Texas and Maryland for the elite wing.

Keldon Johnson is reportedly set to announce his decision before the early signing period concludes.

According to Rivals reporter Clint Jackson, Johnson will make his college decision next week. Chris Fisher of Cats Pause confirmed the news directly from Keldon’s father, Chris Johnson.

"I think he's just wore out and he's ready to go on and get it out of the way," Chris Johnson said of his son.

The elite wing’s final four includes the Kentucky Wildcats, Texas Longhorns, North Carolina State Wolfpack and Maryland Terrapins. He’s a top-25 prospect in every major service, the highest being seventh overall by ESPN.

Johnson had previously indicated he was ready to make a decision, and all signs point to Kentucky being the pick, but his father made it sound like he may not commit during the fall period, which runs from Nov. 8-15.

Assuming Johnson does make his decision next week, it could come after R.J. Barrett makes his decision this Friday. Barrett is down to Kentucky, Duke and Oregon, though all signs point to Duke being the pick.

If, however, Barrett were to pick Kentucky, that makes this an absolutely stacked backcourt next year, something Barrett may not be willing to be part of. He may instead look to pick Maryland or Texas, somewhere he could be ‘the’ guy.

But if Barrett isn’t at Kentucky, it makes it much easier for Johnson to be the guy in Lexington, which is what the current expectation is.

If Johnson picks Kentucky, he’ll join Immanuel Quickley as fall signees for John Calipari’s program. There’s also a strong expectation that Tyler Herro will join it very soon, possibly next week.

Scout recruiting guru Evan Daniels thinks Kentucky will add two fall signees, and all signs point to Johnson and Herro being the guys.
