Kentucky Wildcats Quickies: Beat Ole Miss Edition

New, comments

Priming for UK vs. Ole Miss, young Cats have promise on the hardwood, Brian Bowen headlines mislead, and more!

NCAA Football: Tennessee at Kentucky Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

The Kentucky Wildcats are fresh off of their big win against the Tennessee Volunteers. At 6-2, Mark Stoops’ team is already bowl eligible and the chance of winning eight or nine games is a reality.

Now that a bowl is guaranteed, it will be interesting to see how this team reacts. In recent years, the pressure to make a bowl game loomed until late November. For the first time in his tenure at Kentucky, Stoops focus can now be beyond just making a bowl.

The Ole Miss Rebels?Landsharks/Black Bears/Rebels are coming in at 3-5. Their offense is explosive but their defense is extremely poor. A prime example is blowing a 31-7 lead to the Arkansas Razorbacks last week and losing 38-37.

With Benny Snell and Stephen Johnson doing major damage to the Vols last week, UK’s running game is again primed for a big day.

Tweet of the Day

I have been most impressed with Quade Green in the three exhibition game. He is a knock down three point shooter, he has great court vision, and he looked better every game. By the end of the season he’s going to be great.

Some supposedly smart journalists got it completely wrong with Brian Bowen yesterday. More on that in a bit.

Three takeaways from Kentucky’s exhibition games | Lexington Herald Leader- This team has responded well to every criticism of John Calipari and fixed it the next game. To me, that’s the most important takeaway. And did you see that zone? Whoa buddy.

Fans still want to see Lynn Bowden break out | SEC Country- Count me as one of those fans. He is getting the ball more each game, but I have a sneaking suspicion that he has more in his arsenal. I would love to see a series of just Bowden running the Wildcat.

How Kentucky and Ole Miss match up | Lexington Herald Leader- Mark Story predicts another close win for Kentucky. The wide receivers for Ole Miss are their best unit and may be the best unit on the field today.

Cal: “We just have so far to go” | KSR- I agree with Cal, but the upside to this team is as high as it has been with any team he has had. Wenyen Gabriel and Kevin Knox playing together is going to give team fits. Nick Richards’ improvement will be key and if is as good as he can be, this team can win the entire thing.

Odds and predictions for UK/Ole Miss | SEC Country- The Cats opened as a 4.5 point favorite but it looks like it’ll be 3.5 at kickoff. Kyle Tucker and Joe Mussatto agree with Mark Story and see it as a close affair.

Bold Prediction for UK/Ole Miss | Saturdays Down South- The guys over at SDS predict that Ole Miss will throw for over 400 yards and lose. This is entirely possible.

Former UK commit arrested for DUI | ESPN- Mac Jones made a lot of people mad when he continued to pledge his allegiance and then flipped to Alabama. But things aren’t going so well for Jones in Tuscaloosa. He is firmly the third string QB and Bama continues to recruit players at his position (like Jarren Williams). Jones was busted early Friday morning for a DUI and for having a non-valid ID. I wouldn’t bet on his future at Bama.

Brian Bowen’s status at UofL remains unchanged | WDRB- There were a lot of misleading headlines yesterday that said that UofL was free to reinstate Bowen. This is not the case. The FBI cleared Bowen of any illegal activity but his status with the NCAA is an entirely separate matter. All UofL can do is check his chances of eligibility with the NCAA. As of now, he remains suspended. I highly doubt he will ever see the court.

Top 25 Football Picks | CBS- There are some dandies today in college football including Bedlam, LSU vs. Alabama, and Clemson vs. NC State.

Trevon Duval suspended | Sporting News- The Duke point guard was suspended for today’s exhibition game against Bowie State for breaking team rules or some such nonsense. Duval had a reputation for his attitude. There’s a reason Cal backed off of him.

House of Cards cuts ties with Kevin Spacey | Rolling Stone- The Netflix tv series will proceed without its star for its final season. Spacey’s career is on the ropes after a series of claims of sexual harassment. The producers of the series are contemplating killing off his character, Frank Underwood, and focusing on his wife Claire, played by Robin Wright, for the remaining episodes.

Amazon nearing deal for Lord of the Rings series | The Wrap- I’m not sure exactly what this series would be about but maybe it will take place in the Middle Earth Universe. I think Peter Jackson did a masterful job adapting it to the screen. Maybe the series will follow the books to the letter where Jackson had to cut out a great deal of the plot.
