Brad Calipari may not be the only coach’s son on the Kentucky roster come next year.
Kentucky high school standout Zan Payne — the son of UK assistant coach Kenny Payne — could walk on at Kentucky next year, according to Josh Moore of the Lexington Herald-Leader.
Moore says that Payne does not have any Division I offers right now. His options include prep school and walking on for UK if he does not get any offers during the course of the season, according to Moore.
“He’s gonna leave here being a 1,000-point scorer and is probably one of the best rebounders we’ve ever had in school history,” said coach Brandon Salsman from Lexington Catholic, according to Moore.
Payne, who is 6-5, is a star for Lexington Catholic, a team that was rated the No. 3 team in the state by coaches in the preseason. They finished 24-9 last season.
This is the first mention of Payne’s son possibly walking on in Lexington. The elder Payne has been frequently touted as a head-coaching candidate every offseason since he came to UK, but he has yet to land the elusive job, at least in a situation he wants to be in.
If Zan walks on at UK, perhaps that will help Kenny remain in Lexington for several more years. There’s nothing quite like getting to coach your son, not to mention doing so at that great college hoops program in the land.
