A great showing by the young Cats, who are improving at a dramatic pace.

The Kentucky Wildcats faced a 2-2 UIC team Sunday while looking to build off their marvelous second half performance against Fort Wayne. The Cats did just that with a 107-73 victory as they improved to 6-1 on the season.

In the first half, all the momentum that the Cats had for the final 25 minutes of the Fort Wayne game carried over into the first 20 of this one. Kentucky came out of the gate shooting the ball well and within the first 3 minutes of the game all 5 starters for the Cats had scored.

Kentucky was able to carry that to a 12-7 lead at the first TV timeout. Kentucky could use their size to go inside and score over the UIC defenders as well as use their athleticism to take them off the dribble and get to the rim. Kentucky led by ten 24-14 at the under 12 TV timeout and increased it to 14 by the under 8 break. Kentucky maintained a solid lead the rest of the half and went into the locker room with a 52-35 lead.

First half stats:

Points: Kevin Knox- 15

Rebounds: Quade Green- 4

Assists: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander- 3

As a team the Cats shot 20/30 (66.7%) from the field and outrebounded UIC 17-14. Kentucky’s length gave the UIC players fits as the Cats forced 12 turnovers and had 3 blocks.

The second half was more domination by the Cats. Kentucky’s hot shooting night continued and by the under 12 TV timeout the lead had grown to 22 with a 74-52 lead. Every starter for the Cats had a big game and six players scored in double figures. At the under 8 TV timeout the lead had grew to 29.

With just over 4 minutes left in the game the Cats had already broke the century mark for the first time in 30 games going back to the 100-58 victory over Texas A&M on January 3rd, 2017. Kentucky was able to clear their bench and get people some playing time down the stretch and cruise to a 107-73 victory over UIC.

Kentucky, for the first time this season played a complete 40 minutes, something this fan base needed to get a good feeling about this team and what they have the potential to be. Now we are entering the stretch where Kentucky plays only on Saturday’s for the month of December.

This is typically when we really start to see the most improvement out of Cal’s teams because of all the practice time they get, known as “Camp Cal”. It will be fun to watch this team grow as they move closer to conference play.

Final stats from the game:
