NCAA Football: Vanderbilt at Kentucky Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

Sandwiched in between basketball recruiting and basketball games, the Kentucky Wildcats have a pretty important football game against the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville today.

The ‘Dores are 4-5 and 0-5 in the SEC. They’ve been blown out of every conference game this season and Ole Miss, Kentucky’s last opponent, beat them 57-35 back in October.

After securing a bowl and a sixth win against Tennessee two weeks ago, the Wildcats stumbled at home last week as they lost to Ole Miss by three points. The defense couldn’t stop the Rebel’s receivers and that ended up being the number one reason for their demise.

While Vandy has a good running back in Ralph Webb, they don’t don’t have a single unit on the team that is the caliber of the Ole Miss receiving core.

Win this game and the possibility of eight wins is back on the table and people forget about last Saturday. Lose and there’s a chance the fanbase checks out until Louisville comes to town at the end of the month.

FWIW: Mark Stoops is 0-2 against Vandy in Nashville and he is 2-2 overall.

Tweet of the Day

SEC basketball went 13-0 last night. I cannot remember an opening night in basketball when at least one SEC team didn’t get upset by some bum. The conference seems to be in a very good place to start the season.

Quickies

Bold Predictions: Vandy beats Kentucky | SEC Country- At least one person thinks that the Commodores will get their first SEC win today against the Cats.

They may not yet have an SEC victory to show for it, but the Commodores are coming off their best back-to-back games this season: a strong offensive effort in a loss at South Carolina, and a convincing triumph over a Western Kentucky team that won in Nashville two years ago. The Wildcats enter having lost two of three, the most recent setback coming at home to Ole Miss, and things are getting tense again in Lexington. Vanderbilt’s defense continues to struggle, but that offense is finally clicking entering the first of three very winnable conference games to close the regular season.

Well that doesn’t do much to ease my angst.

Cats find a second half zone | CoachCal.com- The Cats were down 12 and the offense was reeling when John Calipari decided to throw a zone at Utah Valley. The result was back to back turnovers for the Wolverines that sparked a big run for UK. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was particularly lethal in the zone.

Kentucky vs. Vanderbilt matchup and prediction | Lexington Herald Leader- Once again, Kentucky is going into the game with the better players, something that has been true in all except two games this season. But once again this game should be down to the wire. Grab your Pepto.

John Calipari postgame presser | WDRB- Cal was very Cal in his first press conference of the regular season. He was more upbeat than I expected but I can understand. He was very pleased with the effort and the fight that his young team showed. It’s going to be bumpy early but the end result should be fun.

Odds and picks for UK/Vandy | SEC Country- The Commodores are a three point favorite today. Kentucky has been an underdog only twice this season: vs. Florida and at Mississippi State. One out of the three SEC Country writers pick Vandy to win. GULP.

RJ Barrett picks Duke | Bleacher Report- To the surprise of absolutely no one, the top basketball player in 2018 picked the Blue Devils over Oregon and Kentucky. Barrett is the third number one recruit in a row to pick Duke. I’m getting sick of this.

Keldon Johnson to decide today | Baltimore Sun- Even with the disappointment (but expected) Barrett decision, Big Blue Nation will most likely get a big boost this evening as five star wing Keldon Johnson announces his commitment this evening right in the middle of UK/Vandy. He is down to UK, Maryland, Texas and NC State. The smart money is on Calipari. He will announce at 6:00 PM.

Taylor Murray leads UK Hoops to opening victory | Lexington Herald Leader- The women also won their season opener last night against Sacramento State 101-70. Murray led the ‘Cats with 22 points.

Men and Women place in cross country | UK Athletics- The Cross Country Cats had a good showing in the NCAA Southeast Regionals. The men placed 8th while the women placed 11th.

IU gets blown out by Indiana State | WDRB- Archie Miller’s debut started with a thud as the Hoosiers were dismantled by the Indiana State Sycamores. The IU faithful are in for a LOOOOOOONNNNGGG season.
