Of all the great guards that John Calipari has recruited in his time at Kentucky, it’s fairly certain that John Wall is the best. And Cal’s top guard has high praise for Kentucky’s current backcourt duo of Malik Monk and De’Aaron Fox.
Between Fox’s elite athleticism and Monk’s combination of athleticism and scoring ability, these two have quickly become national stars this year. Fox posted the second triple-double in school history against Arizona State, and Monk has scored at an unbelievable rate, averaging 22.6 points per-game, and scoring over 30 points against both Ole Miss (34) and North Carolina (47).
Wall raved about the two Kentucky stars in a recent interview with Slam Magazine.
They’re doing a great job. They’re probably the best backcourt in college basketball. They’re explosive, can shoot the ball, and are playing well. It’s exciting for me this year because I get to see them a lot because they play for Kentucky and are always on TV. Me and De’Aaron built a bond last year. When we were in Houston, I got there a day early and went to go watch him play in high school. I’m excited the way they’re doing and can’t wait to see them get to the pros.
Speaking of Wall’s help in recruiting Fox, the Washington Wizards were in town to play the Houston Rockets last year, giving Wall a chance to see Fox in his senior season at Cypress Falls High School.
Wall was a star at Kentucky, leading Kentucky to a 35-3 record his freshman year, and went on to become the No. 1 draft pick in 2010, so he’d know a star (or two) when he sees it.
