Mohamed Bamba update: More positive signs for UK; Quade Green on recruiting him

Can Quade Green and UK land Mo Bamba? It’s looking more and more likely...

Kentucky has all but secured the top-ranked recruiting class in 2017, and that’s before their top target even makes his decision.

Mohamed Bamba has been someone John Calipari has gone hard after in this cycle, and for good reason. Calipari is already telling Bamba he can be the next Anthony Davis, which tells you just how important the five-star forward is to this class.

That’s the same comparison Quade Green made for Bamba in an interview with KSTV, as the UK signee is coming hard after his AAU teammate to join him in Lexington.

Bamba has played with Green on the AAU circuit with the PSA Cardinals, and it's very possible they play together again in college. They visited together last summer before coming to Big Blue Madness together as well.

Speaking of visits, Calipari and Tony Barbee just visited Bamba on Wednesday, and now, 247 Sports recruiting director Jerry Meyer has changed his Crystal Ball pick to UK. He previously had Duke, who was viewed as the early favorite, but they’ve faded since taking a commitment from Wendell Carter Jr.

Adding to that, Meyer did a Facebook Live Q&A in which he indicated Duke may be letting up on Bamba as UK is in strong position.

“I just don’t get the feel that Duke is after him with the same fervor,” Meyer said. “I think his relationship with Quade Green, and he also knows Hamidou Diallo, but especially Quade Green, I think Kentucky has a very, very good chance with Bamba.”

Bamba is the man UK really wants to finish off their 2017 class. With so many players expected to leave for the NBA Draft or graduation, adding another elite big man like Bamba is critical, and even he admitted that playing with Green in college is something he would like.

"It means everything. It means the world," Bamba told the Herald-Leader. "To play with a good point guard, it takes your game to a whole new level. ... He's great. He's so smooth and poised. You don't see that at this age."

It also helps that the other two contenders, Michigan and Texas, have struggled this season, especially the Longhorns. They’re now 7-9 and just suspended leading scorer Tevin Mack indefinitely.

The Wolverines are 11-6, have lost three of their last four games, and just got blown out by Illinois. They’ve not projected to make the NCAA Tournament. That’s after going 39-29 the previous two seasons.

If Bamba wants a school where he’s assured of playing time and contending for a Final Four berth, there’s no question UK is in the best position to offer those.
