The national media doesn't seem high on the Kentucky Wildcats, at least in Week 1 vs Southern Miss.
Whether it's USA Today ranking USM 29 spots ahead of the Cats, or CBS Sports putting them 40 spots lower than this C-USA power, the Cats just aren't getting much respect heading into the opening weekend of college football. At least Campus Insiders has UK winning 31-30.
Another entity who sees this matchup being close is the New York Post. The writer, who ironically goes by "The Wildcat," thinks UK will struggle with USM.
Sadly, this Wildcat doesn't sound like he knows what he's talking about in his assessment of the real Wildcats.
We’ll acknowledge recruiting under the first three years of Mark Stoops’ stewardship has been respectable (excepting weakness at wideout), especially on defense.
Um, wide receiver is one of the last positions I would say is a weakness on this team, unless being unable to make a bad QB look good makes them bad. They definitely failed at that last year.
Alas, the Wildcat picked the fighting Brett Favre's to cover the 6-point spread UK is favored by.
Commonwealth Stadium remains a challenging place for a visiting non-conference team to play at night, but first-year coach Jay Hopson (ex-Alcorn State) has the defensive thoroughbreds — and Golden Eagles offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson was the offensive coordinator at Kentucky last season, so he knows things. Southern Miss’s pass rush could prove the difference. Grab Brett Favre’s alma mater (+6), for one unit.
Saturday night can’t get here soon enough.
