Kentucky Wildcats redshirt freshman forward Tai Wynyard will once again be representing New Zealand in the FIBA 3-on-3 U18 World Championships this week after leading his home country to the gold medal in 2015.
The 6-foot-10, 255-pound Wynyard started 2015 by winning the Australian NBL as a member of the Breakers. Then in June, Wynyard traveled to Debrecen, Hungary, to compete in the FIBA U18 3x3 World Championships, where he won a gold medal and the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.
You can watch Wynyard in action, as well as the entire FIBA 3-on-3 U18 World Championships, on FIB's 3x3 YouTube page. You can see the scheduled of New Zealand's group play games here
This year's tournament will begin Wednesday in Astana, Kazakhstan. Wynyard's team begins group play Thursday vs. the Philippines in pool play.
A native of Auckland, New Zealand, Wynyard enrolled at UK last December after graduating from Rangitoto College. He did not appear in any games during the 2015-16 Kentucky basketball season, but is expected to contribute on next year's team after Marcus Lee and Skal Labissiere left, while Marques Bolden picked Duke over UK and left the Cats with not a lot of depth in the frontcourt.
