The Road to Rupp continues this weekend and the 7th Region semifinals take center stage this evening with two huge matchups that are too close to call.
First round matchup in the 9th and 16th Regions round out Friday’s games.
Trinity vs. Ballard
The Trinity Shamrocks (27-6) and the Ballad Bruins (22-10) have each dominated the region over the last few seasons and have played one another in the finals several times. Tonight the two meet in the region semifinals.
Trinity survived a game Male squad to advance while Ballard needed overtime to get past the Central Yellowjackets.
If this matchup is anything like Ballard’s 58-54 win over the Shamrocks in the Louisville Invitational Tournament then the victor will have potentially survived another thrill on their way to the finals.
St. Xavier vs. Eastern
St. Xavier (22-9) turned back Waggner, 57-51, to advance into tonight’s semifinal against the Eastern Eagles (18-11). Eastern defeated DuPont Manual 52-46 to earn their date with the Tigers whom they won a January decision over 69-64.
Dixie Heights vs. Holy Cross
The Dixie Heights Colonels (19-10) won the the 34th District and did so with double digit victories in the first round and championship. Now they will attempt to get a measure of revenge against a talented Holy Cross Indians (22-8) team that defeated them by nine points during the regular season.
The Indians have extra incentive to put in a quality performance after they lost to to Covington Catholic 62-41 in the 35th District Finals.
Newport Central Catholic vs. Cooper
The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds have played bridesmaid to Covington Catholic time and time again in the 9th Region. Their 2016 postseason run got off to a good start with a 36th District championship, including a gutsy overtime win over Newport in the finals.
The Thoroughbreds defeated their first round opponent, the Cooper Jaguars (24-4), by 14 points during the regular season.
Rowan County vs. West Carter
The Rowan County Vikings (19-11) won the 61st District with dominating wins over Menifee and Fleming Counties. However, the Vikings dropped two games to the West Carter Comets (21-8) during the regular season.
Boyd County vs. Raceland
The Boyd County Lions roared in the 64th District with two convincing wins. Tonight they play the 14-16 Raceland Rams in the 16th Region Tournament in Morehead. This will be the first meeting this season between the Lions and the Rams.
