Sometimes following college recruiting is as simple as putting two and two together.
The bad news is Kentucky appears to be fading a bit in the Marques Bolden sweepstakes as Duke is now looking like the favorite. With the spring signing period nearing, there's no other true center left on the board that can come in and be an impact playing for the Cats next season.
The good news is there is another quality big man on the board in five-star forward/center Jarrett Allen. Just as word of Duke being the favorite for Bolden began spreading, Allen revealed that UK head coach John Calipari is still recruiting him.
"The name speaks for itself," Allen said, talking up Calipari and the job UK has done with recent post players.
Returning players could include Marcus Lee, Derek Willis, Isaac Humphries and Tai Wynyard.
Calipari has been telling Allen there's room for him, too.
"With Kentucky, Coach Cal keeps talking about how you don't have to play 30 or 40 minutes to show your skill set," he said. "He keeps saying that we all can play together - me, Bam, Sacha and Wenyen.
"As long as I can show what I have, as long as they can develop me, then I'm fine with that."
Allen, ironically, also plays in the state of Texas, but to this point, UK has shown little to no interest in Allen after securing commitments from fellow 2016 forwards Sacha Killeya-Jones, Bam Adebayo and Wenyen Gabriel while also pursuing Bolden. That's allowed the home-state Longhorns to surge into the lead for Allen as it looks like Shaka Smart is poised to add the talented forward.
But now that there appears to be a real possibility Cal won't land Bolden, he's making Allen an option again for a sixth and likely final spot in the 2016 class. It wasn't that long ago that UK looked like the favorite for Allen, so they'll be in the running for him with a strong push over the next month.
And I don't believe it's a coincidence the news on Bolden and Allen have come out in the same day, though I also don't think UK is out of the running for Bolden. Cal wants to add a true impact center to this class, so he's going to go all out to land the 6-11 Texan.
But if he can't, it looks like UK will make a late push for Allen.
