The Kentucky Wildcats have scored again in 2017.
The latest commitment comes form Jarred Vanderbilt, who announced his pledge to UK on Friday. He did so on ESPNU’s Twitter and Facebook page.
A 6-8 forward from Victory Prep in Houston (TX), Vanderbilt is ranked by Scout.com as the No. 15 prospect in the class of 2017, while 247 has him at No. 19, ESPN at No. 23 and Rivals.com at No. 21. 247 Composite, which measures all of the recruiting services together, has him ranked No. 19.
Every service has him pegged as a five-star prospect, though his position is not as a big of a consensus. He’s skilled enough to be a small forward in college, but he also has the tools to be a power forward as well.
Vanderbilt’s game resembles that of Lamar Odom: A skilled forward who passes and handles the ball like a guard, but can play either the 3 or 4 spot at a high level. That makes him the perfect forward for John Calipari’s position-less approach, which should allow Vanderbilt to utilize all of his strengths as soon as he arrives on campus.
The decision came as a bit of a surprise since Vanderbilt had not previously set a decision date, and the decision to commit Friday was announced just an hour before he committed.
But Vanderbilt has known where he wanted to go for sometime now. He’s made it no secret UK has been his favorite for the past year, and that never changed. The only issue was a broken foot sidelined Vanderbilt for most of a summer recruiting circuit, leading UK to take a small step back and wait until he was healthy this fall.
Now that he is and back to being a star on the hardwood, it was only a matter of time before UK and Vanderbilt sealed the deal. He joins five-star center Nick Richards, five-star forward P.J. Washington, five-star point guard Quade Green, and four-star combo guard Shai Alexander in UK’s loaded 2017 class.
