The Kentucky Wildcats just wrapped up a major recruiting haul in the early signing period. When the late signing period begins in the spring, expect UK to finish with the No. 1 or 2 class for 2017, and one recruit who will have a big say in that is Trae Young.
The five-star point guard out of Oklahoma is among UK’s biggest remaining targets. it looks like a commitment will come before the early period begins, possibly as soon as early January, according to Adam Zagoria and Jaki Goldner of FloHoops.
“I’m getting near to the end of my recruitment and I’m starting to look at these teams play and come to a conclusion what school I want to choose so it was a really big thing for them to come out and I’m really happy for that.”
Asked if he planned to attend any college games soon, Young said: “I’m going to head to the schools and head to at least one game.”
Asked when he might announce, Young said, “Probably early January. Don’t have a date set yet, but probably early January.”
The plan originally was for Young to decide in December, then it got moved to January, then he considered signing early, and now he’s back to deciding in January.
Part of why Young considered signing early was UK making sure they came out of the early period with a point guard. They did so, but it was Quade Green who signed with the Cats, leaving some to speculate UK is no longer in the running for Young.
What does Young think of that?
“You could say Kentucky [has signed another point guard] but Coach Cal has made it work,” Young said. “He’s had a bunch of guards come through and play at the same time. He’s made it work. But obviously when a guard goes there, that definitely opens my eyes.”
One other note: Zagoria mentioned that Kansas, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma all watched Young this weekend at the Thanksgiving Hoopfest in Texas, but UK wasn’t there. Don’t read anything into that since UK is in the Bahamas right now getting set to face Arizona State.
John Calipari still badly wants Young to be part of UK’s 2017 class, but with Green in the fold, the Sooners look like the favorites now.
