The Kentucky Wildcats’ freshman backcourt of Malik Monk and De’Aaron Fox are already drawing preseason honors.
It was announced on Monk that Fox s one of 20 candidates on the preseason watch list for the 2016-17 Bob Cousy Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top point guard.
On Tuesday, Monk was tabbed one of 20 candidates on the preseason watch list for the 2016-17 Jerry West Award, which will be presented to the nation’s top shooting guard. Both awards are presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
A Naismith High School Player of the Year finalist, Fox was named a first-team selection his senior season by the Naismith All-America squads. Fox played in both the McDonald’s All American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.
Monk joined Fox in the latter, where both earned co-MVP honors. Fox was a three-time all-state performer out of Cypress Lakes High School in Texas. He was tabbed the Texas Gatorade High School Player of the Year in 2016.
Monk was the 2016 Arkansas Gatorade High School Player of the Year in addition to earning the state’s Mr. Basketball award. He averaged 28.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game as a senior at Bentonville.
