We didn’t discuss this due to a dearth of Quickies over the last few days, but Ira Combs, brother of Oscar Combs who famously started the Cats Pause, passed away on Thursday. Ira used to send me his columns every week, which I would link. I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing him, but his reputation as a supporter of Eastern Kentucky and the mountain regions was well known.
Ira apparently died of a heart attack while picking up his media credentials for the Louisville slate of NCAA Tournament games on Thursday.
Our condolences go out to the Combs family and friends.

Cincinnati players decide that losing gracefully isn’t manly. Or something. Consider:
SHAQ THOMAS: I definitely think they’re beatable. It’s just you have to execute for 40 minutes and you can’t let up for 40 minutes because, as soon as the crowd gets into it, they obviously feed off of that. I think they’re not unbeatable, but we’re going to see coming up.
JERMAINE SANDERS: I think they’re a very beatable team. You just can’t give them anything easy. They feed off of transition buckets and easy like layups and things like that. So you just can’t give them anything easy. Make it tough for their big guys to score around the rim.
The right response to this question, guys, is "They might be beatable, but not by us."

Kentucky just to much for Cincinnati. Indeed, that is so.
-
Roughing up the Wildcats did not work for Cincinnati. Again, that’s exactly right. UC had to try that, and it paid some dividends for a little while, but it was never going to be enough.
