The Kentucky Wildcats will be back in Rupp Arena Monday night when the Illinois State Redbirds come to town.
The Cats are coming off an 83-62 win over South Florida in the Hoophall Miami Invitational last Friday. The win came at a bit of a cost as sophomore point guard Tyler Ulis suffered a sprained elbow that may keep him sidelined vs ISU. If he's unable to go, look for freshman guard Charles Matthews to be in the starting lineup as a third guard. Matthews has been playing great as of late, culminating with his career-high 11 points vs USF.
As for the Redbirds out of the Missouri Valley Conference, they enter the game with a 3-4 record, which includes a game against No. 2 Maryland in which they led with six minutes to go and trailed by just two with 4:30 to go before the Terrapins pulled away for a 77-66 win.
The Redbirds are led by guards DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell and Paris Lee, who average a combined 27.9 points per game. Monday's game marks the first-ever meeting between Illinois State and Kentucky. The Redbirds are 8-1 versus current members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC), and head coach Dan Muller is 1-0 after leading ISU to a 62-55 win over Texas A&M (March 24, 2014) in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI).
This year, the Redbirds were picked to finish fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference after returning three of five starters and six of 13 letter-winners from last year's team, which went 22-13 overall and made it to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
Here is everything you'll need to watch and follow the Cats take on the Redbirds.
